Arbitrarily Large Neutron Amplification in Subcritical Nuclear Reactors

نویسندگان

چکیده

In a subcritical reactor, each neutron produces only keff < 1 per generation (asymptotically and on average), thus the population decreases exponentially in absence of external source. The chain reaction is easy to stop, making such reactors inherently stable. Interestingly, contrary common wisdom, there no relation between keff, source intensity, output power reactor. this paper, I present various possible strategies exploit fact, apply them design rudimentary multi-layer system that allows reach an arbitrarily large number fissions neutron, while keeping fixed (I used keff=0.97). behavior amplifier verified with simple Monte-Carlo transport simulations. proposal admittedly brings complications subtleties need be studied further, but, if developed, could allow drive faint sources, e.g. radioisotope based.

Nuclear Weapons and Nuclear Reactors

This report addresses the tenuous link between nuclear power reactor development and the proliferation of nuclear weapons, particularly with respect to possible terrorist exploitation. Arguments are presented that contradict the popular image of nuclear weaponry as a "basement project". 4 CONTENTS

Safety of Nuclear Reactors

Nuclear reactors have, during the first twenty years of their existence, achieved an impressive safety record, possibly exceeding that of any comparable industry. As revealed in apaper byHenriB. Smets of the European Nuclear Energy Agency, there have been recorded during this period of time but six fatalities and less than 30 persons seriously irradiated from reactor accidents. Three of the fat...

Numerical Techniques for the Neutron Diffusion Equations in the Nuclear Reactors

The space-time neutron diffusion equations with multi-group of delayed neutrons are a couple of the stiff nonlinear partial differential equations. The finite difference method is used to reduce the partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations. This ordinary differential equations are rewritten in a matrix form. The general solution of the matrix differential equation con...

Non-normal and Stochastic Amplification in Turbulent Dynamo: Subcritical Case

Our attention focuses on the stochastic dynamo equation with non-normal operator that give an insight into the role of stochastics and non-normality in the galactic magnetic field generation. The main point of this Letter is a discussion of the generation of a large-scale magnetic field that cannot be explained by traditional linear eigenvalue analysis. We present a simple stochastic model for ...

Teaching About Nature’s Nuclear Reactors

Naturally occurring nuclear reactors existed in uranium deposits on Earth long before Enrico Fermi built the first man-made nuclear reactor beneath Staggs Field in 1942. In the story of their discovery, there are important lessons to be learned about scientific inquiry and scientific discovery. Now, there is evidence to suggest that the Earth’s magnetic field and Jupiter’s atmospheric turbulenc...
